Virginia, Stanford top Princeton Review rankings

The University of Virgina offers the best quality of life for law students, and Stanford Law School offers the best classroom experience, according to Princeton Review’s annual rankings.

The Princeton Review tallied its rankings based on surveys of 18,000 students attending 168 law schools over the past three years. The 80-question survey asked students to rate multiple attributes of their schools including their professors and fellow classmates.

CUNY expanding incubator program for new grads with Cal Western, Thomas Jefferson

California Western School of Law has launched an incubator law office for attorneys in solo or small firm practice. The Access to Law Initiative is modeled after the Community Resource Legal Network at CUNY School of Law, and is being run by a visiting professor from the New York law school. 

Big firm salaries drop: what it means

Starting salaries at the nation’s largest firms dropped this year from $160,000 to $145,000 for law firms with 700 or more attorneys, according to a new study by NALP, the association for legal career professionals. The drop is a further sign that firms are grappling and adjusting to a new kind of market, and some feel the old legal market will never come back.

Dean's departure from Louisiana College Pressler School of Law could mean delay in opening

Louisiana College Pressler School of Law announced it may delay its intended fall 2013 opening date, after the law school dean, J. Michael Johnson, resigned. Johnson, who was hired in 2010, left the university for a “great job offer,” the school reported.

Louisiana College is in Shreveport, Louisiana and is planned as a faith-based law school.

Boston University gets $18M for new building

An $18 million dollar gift from a former faculty member will finally allow Boston University School of Law to break ground on a long-planned new building.

The gift is from Sumner Redstone, who taught at the law school, but is far better known as the primary owner and executive chairman of both CBS Corporation and Viacom. Redstone joined the Boston University law faculty in 1982. He created one of the nation’s first courses in entertainment law and pioneered the school’s intellectual property curriculum.

Indiana Tech to offer unique early admissions process

Indiana Tech Law School has created a unique early decision application process for students who agree to only apply to the new law school. It will streamline the application process, notifying students within a month if they are admitted. But, students must then commit to the law school.

Indiana Tech will accept early applications from Sept. 15 to October 31, 2012 for Fall 2013, the year the Fort Wayne, Ind. school will open.

Rutgers-Camden dean declares victory in battle to stay part of Rutgers system

After a long period of uncertainty, it appears Rutgers School of Law-Camden will not leave the Rutgers system as had been discussed. At least that’s what Dean Rayman Solomon recently announced to staff and students.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie had vowed to fold the law school into Rowan University, a former teachers college that became a university in 1997. That proposal, designed to bring more money into the state’s higher educational system, was controversial from the start.
