Cooley wins tenure battle in court

Thomas M. Cooley Law School properly terminated a tenured professor, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit ruled this week.

The Michigan-based law school terminated Lynn Branham after she refused to teach Constitutional Law. Branham had insisted that she would teach only Criminal Law or Criminal Procedure. She claimed that she suffered from a disability, that Cooley violated her rights under the federal Americans With Disabilities Act and a similar Michigan statute, and that Cooley intentionally inflicted emotional distress.

Texas A&M's plans to acquire law school met with concern

Texas A&M University’s recently announced plan to acquire Texas Wesleyan University's School of Law has been met with mixed reactions in the state. 

In the proposal, Texas A&M, a public university, would acquire the private law school for $25 million. It would gain ownership and operational control of the law school and would rent land from Texas Wesleyan. Officials said the proposal for the new Texas A&M University School of Law at Texas Wesleyan University should be finalized by June 1, 2013.

Class action lawsuit against Cooley dismissed

A U.S. District judge dismissed the class action lawsuit against Thomas M. Cooley Law School on July 20 that had been filed by graduates over misleading employment data.

“We’re obviously pleased with this decision,” said Don LeDuc, Cooley’s president and dean. “We are committed to graduating law students who are ready to practice law, and their success in a tough job market is our success too.  We have always been in compliance with American Bar Association and National Association for Law Placement employment reporting standards.”

Most innovative law schools announced

Law schools are pushing the boundaries of the traditional law school model and experimenting at a level that legal education has not seen for several years, a new story reveals.

The National Jurist invited every law school in the U.S. to submit a nomination for how it is innovating its curriculum. More than 40 schools responded, showing that schools are experimenting with boot camps, mentoring programs, technology and programs that mirror the medical school model.

LSAC to verify LSAT medians

The agreement that the LSAC and American Bar Association reached last month to have the LSAC verify LSAT scores is another step in the right direction towards greater transparency in the application process for prospective law students.

“What has improved substantially, is the amount of disclosure and accountability,” said Kyle McEntee, executive director and co-founder of Law School Transparency.

Thomas Cooley Ann Arbor Receives Accreditation, school announced joint JD/MBA program

 

The American Bar Association granted full accreditation to Thomas M. Cooley Law School’s Ann Arbor campus. With the full approval, all four of Thomas Cooley’s Michigan campus locations have achieved full ABA approval status. It’s other Michigan campuses are located in Lansing, Auburn Hills, and Grand Rapids. Cooley Law School remains one institution.

"We are pleased that the Council saw fit to grant both provisional approval and final approval at the same time," said Thomas Cooley President Don LeDuc in a statement.

Pre-law students say ranking more important than job placement

Pre-law students still value rankings over employments statistics, according to a Kaplan survey.

Thirty-two percent of the 645 responses to the survey said that a law school’s ranking was most important when determining which school to attend. Only 8 percent said that a law school’s job-placement statistics as most important.

Cornell gets $25m donation

Cornell Law School announced that it has been promised a $25 million donation from a former graduate. According to the Cornell Daily Sun, the donation is largest in the law school’s history and will help bolster the law school’s general finances. The money will also be used to fund student scholarships and faculty research. Use of the money is being dictated by the donor, who requested to remain anonymous.

Dean should resign over misleading job data, policy group claims

 

A policy watch-group is calling for the dean of admissions at Rutgers - Camden to resign while urging the American Bar Association to investigate a “demonstrably deceptive” recruiting campaign by the law school.

Law School Transparency says that an ongoing recruitment campaign by Rutgers targets potential students using misleading employment data.
