Arizona State move controversy; Florida Coastal dominates moot court

Moot court domiantion, after Florida Coastal School of Law recently took top honors at two national moot court competitions — the National Latina/o Law Students Association Moot Court Competition in Los Angeles on October 6, and the National Civil Rights and Liberties Moot Court Competition in Atlanta on October 7.

Coastal Law is now 3-for-3 at national competitions this year, having won the E. Earle Zehmer Worker’s Compensation National Moot Court Competition on August 20 in Orlando, Fla., where the school also claimed the Best Advocate and Best Brief Awards.

Expansion in the face declining applications, after several blogs criticized Arizona State University for its plans to move to downtown Phoenix from nearby Tempe and build a law school building twice the size of its current location. For the plan to be financially feasible, the school would have to significantly increase enrollment and raise tuition. Above the Law said “The members of the administration really ought to get together and come up with some better lines to feed to the media so it looks like they all agree that gouging students is in their best interests.”

Steven Harper, an adjunct professor at Northwestern University, wrote on his blog, The Belly of the Beast, that “As ASU and other state schools try to eliminate their need for public funds, student loan debt is filling the gap. The average debt for ASU’s law school graduates is $103,436. Together with the school’s employment statistics, such growing indebtedness suggests that techniques aimed at self-sufficiency for the school are having the opposite impact on many of its graduates.”
