Looks like a second-year law student may be needing a lawyer of his own. An Ohio State University Moritz College of Law student has been accused of stealing law books from the campus library and selling them online for more than $10,000.

While it is unknown when the stealing began, police believe that the individual took more than 200 books from the library, one by one and proceeded to list them on Amazon.com The accused was caught when a Brazilian lawyer purchased a book from the student and noticed a crossed-out OSU ink stamp on the inside cover. The lawyer then contacted police, who launched an investigation.

“I haven’t seen anything like this before,” said OSU police detective Pete Dragonette, who is leading the investigation.

Book theft can be hard to track, especially at universities like OSU that hold several million volumes. While new technology hinders theft, it doesn’t completely deter it. In addition, ordinary volumes such as those that were allegedly stolen, aren’t usually closely watched.
