Brooklyn Law School has created an accelerated two-year J.D. program that will begin in summer 2014. After a year of planning, review and revision, the school’s board unanimously approved the new program, which is the first in the New York City region.
“We have listened to and carefully considered the concerns about the legal education system,” said Nick Allard, dean of the school. “We worked hard to ensure that the 2-year program is fully compliant with the American Bar Association rules and other applicable requirements. I am grateful for the willingness and enthusiasm of our faculty to find a bold alternative that opens new doors for students who might otherwise not consider law school.”
Other schools that have started such programs include: the University of Dayton School of Law; Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles; the Earle Mack School of Law at Drexel University in Philadelphia; Pepperdine University School of Law in Malibu; Washburn University School of Law in Topeka, Kan.; and Northwestern Law School in Chicago.
Students can participate in the “Brooklyn 2-3-4” program which allows them to earn their degree at their chosen pace.
The program is targeted at mid-career professionals, foreign-trained English-speaking lawyers, adults seeking to reenter the workforce and highly qualified students that would normally participate in a 3-year program.
“Because the accelerated J.D. is among the first of its kind and the very first in New York, we expect to draw a new cross-section of students that complements the traditional demographics of our full- and part-time student body,” Allard said.
