Harvard Law School suspended its free third-year tuition to students who go into public service after graduation. The law school will reconstruct the program, called the Public Service Initiative, and focus on providing more money to students and alumni in financial need. School officials expected the program to assist as many as 80 third-year students annually.
“We remain committed to this program for current students despite the economic downturn, but we are not likely to extend it to future incoming classes,” said Dean Martha Minow in an e-mail to faculty, staff and students.
The university lost 27 percent on its endowment investments in the fiscal year. Minow said she has appointed a task force to develop a public-service successor initiative that will be announced by March.
