In response to the push to go green, John Marshall Law School in Chicago launched a new certificate in sustainability law.
Offered through its center for real estate law, the new program allows J.D. students to center their sights on the hot topic of sustainability and its increasing importance in real estate, transactional and regulatory work.
“Only a small number of lawyers will specialize in sustainability law, but most business or commercial real estate lawyers need to know about the implications and consequences that sustainability, the green building movement and climate change will have on the real estate industry,” said Celeste Hammond, director of the Center for Real Estate Law at The John Marshall Law School.
John Marshall already offers courses in sustainability law, like historic preservation and natural resources law, but the school spotted a need to have a more focused program of study in the area.
Students seeking the new certificate will be required to take courses in energy law, environmental law, local government law, real estate transactions, sustainability in modern real estate transactions and a broader sampling of elective courses in real estate, environmental and government regulation law.
In the spring, the school will offer a new class on energy law in the context of real estate projects.
