Olivia Hoff is combining science with the law.

The third-year law student, who has a bachelor’s degree in Physics with a minor in Mathematics, chose the University of Mississippi School of Law because of her interest in air and space law and for the clinical opportunities available.

She is a member of our Dean’s Leadership Council, and she is entrusted with helping mentor new students, giving tours to potential students and representing the law school at various events around the state.

As part of the law school’s Pro Bono Initiative, she helps impoverished and low-income self-representing litigants prepare documents for family law matters such as divorce, child custody, and alimony in the Mississippi Delta.

Most recently, she and two other students won the world championship at the 2015 Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition in Jerusalem. The team beat India’s Nalsar University of Law in the semifinals and triumphed over National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece in the final round. Additionally, she has been published in the Journal of Law, Technology and Public Policy on cyber law issues. She is a member of the Trial Advocacy Board, Phi Delta Phi, and the Society for Law of Outer Space and Aviation.

“She is intelligent, helpful, willing, caring, and humble. She can work with a continuum of individuals- low income Mississippi Delta residents to international professors and students,” said Macey Edmondson, assistant dean for student affairs. “Her demeanor is always pleasant, always graceful, always thankful. She is definitely a role model for our law school community.”

Hoff is one of 25 future lawyers honored in the National Jurist’s inaugural “Law Student of the Year” feature.
