Lewis & Clark shuts down legal clinic

It was a BAD week for…

Being practical about practical training, after Lewis & Clark Law School announced it would close its legal clinic in downtown Portland. Effective Jan. 1, 2015, the downtown facility — which housed clinics in family law, bankruptcy law and landlord/tenant law — will close its doors leaving students with six remaining in-house clinics.

“Discontinuing even one of our many programs was an extremely difficult decision, but current budget realities — for both the law school and our students — make this move necessary,” said Lisa Harwin, director of public relations. “Unlike other legal aid organizations, this clinic does not receive public funding or other significant outside funding. We must be cognizant of the fact that without outside funding, student tuition dollars pay these expenses, and we are trying to keep tuition as low as possible for all students.”

Like many law schools, Lewis & Clark Law School has seen a decline in enrollment. The law school saw a sharp drop in enrollment from 738 in 2011, 750 in 2012 to 660 in 2013 and 614 this year.

Harwin says the law school is looking for ways to integrate the subjects of the cut clinics in different organizations or programs at Lewis & Clark Law School.
