Starting this spring, New York Law School is offering a two-year honors J.D. program. The new program will offer its traditional curriculum over an accelerated period of 24 months. Students will have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities such as moot court and law review.

The inaugural two-year honors J.D. class has 23 students, with undergraduate degrees from institutions such as Columbia University, University of Michigan and New York University. Several students have postgraduate degrees and some have professional experience in medicine, government and on Wall Street.

All students in the accelerated honors program will receive a $50,000 scholarship, reducing the cost of the accelerated degree by one-third. Additionally, all 23 students will receive paid postgraduate fellowships through the law school’s partnerships with firms, companies, nonprofit organizations and government agencies.

“We believe it is vital to respond creatively and dynamically to the changing realities of the marketplace,” Dean Anthony Crowell said in a news release. “We are pleased by the enthusiastic response from the outstanding members of our inaugural class who recognize both the opportunities and rigorous challenges that lie ahead.”

The honors program focuses on key growth areas to New York City’s economy including media, intellectual property, technology, business, financial services, government and public interest.

“The two-year J.D. Honors Program reflects the innovate programs introduced at NYLS,” said Deborah N. Archer, associate dean for academic affairs, in a news release. “The program capitalizes on our top-notch faculty, strong academic curriculum, and ability to connect to individuals, groups, and enterprises working in key growth areas of law. By offering a curricular focus in these growth areas, we were able to attract students with solid work experience or proven interest in these fields.”

Several law schools offer accelerated J.D. programs. Northwestern University School of Law, Southwestern Law School and Pepperdine University School of Law are amongst the growing list of law schools giving students the option to earn a J.D. in two years, rather than three.

Earlier this month, New York Law School also announced the new “Business Leaders Scholarship Program,” which will provide three full-tuition and six half-tuition scholarships for working professionals in the four-year, part-time evening program. Scholarship applications for the fall 2015 semester are now being accepted.
