The University of Maryland’s law school has a new name thanks to a $30 million donation — the largest gift the school has ever received.

The new name — the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law — is named after an 1880 graduate of the 195-year-old law school, and the grandfather of the donors.

The donation is courtesy of the Carey Foundation, which was founded by current chairman William Polk Carey and Francis J. Carey, foundation president. The foundation has given $50 million to the Johns Hopkins University for the the Carey Business School, and $50 million to Arizona State University for the W.P. Carey School of Business.

The Carey family has strong ties with the law school at University of Maryland. Francis King Carey’s elder brother, James, also graduated from the school in 1875, and his son, Francis J. Carey, graduated in 1912. Maryland’s law school has made a commitment to raise an additional $15 million on its own.

Paul Bekman, a 1971 graduate who is the chairman of the board of visitors, said the donation will allow the school to attract and retain top-quality faculty, and to expand the curriculum, the Baltimore Sun reported.

The donation comes as good news a year after the school was in the spotlight for potential fiscal improprieties.

Former law dean Karen Rothenberg was under fire for receiving payments totaling $350,000 in lieu of sabbatical time in 2007. A state audit labeled the payments as “questionable compensation payments.” Rothenberg eventually returned the money, and the audit hastened the retirement of David Ramsay, University of Maryland, Baltimore president.
