The University of Miami is seeking ABA approval to offer an LL.M. in international arbitration. The school has offered an LL.M. in international law with a specialization in arbitration, but this would take the degree to the next step.

The move is possible thanks to a donation from White & Case LLP, which has made a multi-year commitment to support the school’s International Arbitration Institute.

In addition to providing resources for the development of the LL.M. degree program, the donation funds an endowed scholarship and creates an annual lecture series that will bring leading scholars and practitioners in international arbitration to the Institute from around the world.

The LL.M. program will be renamed the White & Case International Arbitration LL.M. degree program. It is taught by Professor Jan Paulsson, who holds the Michael Klein Distinguished Scholar Chair at the UM School of Law.

“Our objective with the LL.M. degree program is to enable a small and diverse group of outstanding graduate students to grapple with fundamental questions in-depth, and in close collaboration with leading specialists,” Paulsson said. “White & Case’s commitment will make it possible for a series of gifted students to enroll in this ambitious program irrespective of their means. It will also allow for us to initiate a tradition of important lectures.”
