New deans at Texas, Touro, Brooklyn, Cal Western and Emory

With the new fiscal year less than two months away, it is the season for law schools to appoint new deans. Five new deans were recently announced, with more expected. Here is the recap:

Texas hires Farnsworth
The University of Texas has hired Ward Farnsworth to take over as the school’s new dean on June 1. Farnsworth was previously the associate dean for academic affairs at Boston University School of Law, where he joined the faculty in 1997.
He replaces Larry Sager, who resigned in early December amid controversy over bonuses paid to new faculty.

Indiana Tech hires minority dominated faculty

Indiana Tech Law School, which expects to open in Fall 2013, hired its first faculty members — André Douglas Pond Cummings, Victoria Duke, Guadalupe Luna, and Phebe Poydras. The new hires are all minority women, except for Cummings who received his J.D. from Howard University. Peter Alexander, who was previously at Northeastern School of Law is African-American.

Douglas Sylvester named dean at Arizona State

Arizona State has named Douglas Sylvester as dean of the law school. Sylvester had been the interim dean since last May, and also previously served as the associate dean for faculty research and development.

He joined the law school in 2002 as an associate professor, after working at Baker & McKenzie for two years. He received his J.D. from University of Buffalo School of Law in 1994, and an L.LM. from New York University in 1995.
