Eric Lane appointed as interim dean at Hofstra

Hofstra University has named Professor Eric Lane as interim dean of the Maurice A. Deane School of Law, effective March 1.

Dean Nora Demleitner, who will take over as dean at Washington and Lee University School of Law, will remain at Hostra until the end of June to ensure a smooth transition.

Lane has taught at Hofstra Law since 1976. He has a Juris Doctor degree from Fordham Law School and a Master of Laws degree from New York University. He has taught courses in law and literature, constitutional law, statutory interpretation and the legislative process.

Anthony Crowell to take over helm at New York Law School

New York Law School has named Anthony W. Crowell, Counselor to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, as the 16th dean and president of the school.

Crowell replaces Richard Matasar, who had been dean and president since 2000, and left in January to take a position with New York University.

Crowell, who will join the faculty as a professor of law later in the Spring, graduated from American University’s Washington College of Law in 1997. He has taught a seminar on New York City law as an adjunct professor at New York Law School since 2003.

New deans at Stetson, Appalachian, Wash & Lee, McGeorge

Louisiana State is helping to fill the need for law school deans, with two faculty members getting hired at other schools.

Stetson University College of Law hired Christopher Pietruszkiewicz, who has taught at Louisiana State University since 2001. As the vice chancellor for business and financial affairs, he has been responsible for strategic planning, budgeting, financial planning and personnel matters. He also has taught tax policy and procedure, corporate tax, income tax, comparative tax and tax practice and procedure.

Buxbaum to oversee Indiana-Bloomington while Robel away

Hannah Buxbaum will take over as acting dean of the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, on Feb. 1. Buxbaum is currently executive associate dean for academic affairs and John E. Schiller chair in legal ethics. Her appointment follows the announcement Dec. 6 that the law school's current dean, Lauren K. Robel, will be the interim provost for the university.

Belmont law hires former US Attorney General Gonzales

Belmont University College of Law made a bold move and hired former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, a controversial political figure who OK’ed waterboarding tactics while he was counsel to President George W. Bush.

He will be the only former chief law enforcement officer of the U.S. on a law school’s full-time faculty when he starts teaching at the new Nashville institution in January, noted Belmont.

Derrick Bell dies at age 80

Derrick Bell, a law professor and rights advocate, died Oct. 5th at the age of 80. The New York University law professor was the first tenured black professor at Harvard Law School, hired in 1969. He became dean of The University of Oregon School of Law in 1980, becoming the first black to ever head a non-black law school. He left the school in 1985 to protest the lack of minority hiring and taught at Stanford for a year.

Spieler steps down as dean at Northeastern

Emily Spieler will step down from her post as Northeastern University School of Law’s dean at the end of the school year on her 10-year anniversary as the top dog.

The school will create a search committee to find a replacement for Spieler, the Edwin W. Hadley Professor of Law.
During her tenure, she was a big advocate for expanding the school’s international law curriculum, hiring professors well versed in international and immigration law and human rights and raising funds to support students pursuing international experiential learning opportunities.
