Located in Concord, the state’s scenic capital, the UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law enjoys a strong regional reputation and is the only law school in the state. Also, despite its small size and moderate entrance credentials, University of New Hampshire looms large on the global landscape for its reputation in intellectual property law.
The law school was founded as the Franklin Pierce Law Center in 1973. It changed its name when it became part of the state university in 2010, but recently changed its name back to include the former president. The school unveiled the Franklin Pierce Center for Intellectual Property in 2010, built in large part through donations from non-alumni. The Pierce name is known internationally for that.
The school is also recognized for its unique Daniel Webster Scholar Honors Program, an intensive scholarship for upper-level students that, when completed, provides an exemption from the New Hampshire bar exam. The program is limited to 20 students per class, and students gain intense practical experience by working through several clinics under the supervision of judges, lawyers and bar examiners.
The University of New Hampshire offers the most simulation courses in the Northeast and is near the top for externship offerings. With only 223 students in 2018, it is one of the smallest nationwide. But you don’t necessarily have to live near the school to earn your J.D. The school recently was given ABA approval to start an online program, one that focuses on intellectual property. It’s the only such online, singularly focused J.D. program in the nation.
