University of Wisconsin Law School is the highest rated Best Value law school in the Upper Midwest, and it also scores high for practical training and facilities.
“UW Law is an extraordinary law school, and it’s also part of an extraordinary university,” said Dean Margaret Raymond. “Our students take advantage of a vast range of opportunities for interdisciplinary study, speakers, conferences, culture and political events. And there’s nothing like a Big Ten campus on a football Saturday.”
The school is located in Madison, which gets a lot of props for being a great college town. The law school building is also one of the best in the nation, according to a preLaw magazine ranking.
The University of Wisconsin Law School is known for its law-in-action approach to teaching and learning the law; its reputation for efficiency and value; and its experiential learning program, which earned high marks in our practical training rankings.
“We combine our focus on law in action — how law functions in the real world — with a rich array of opportunities for clinical and experiential learning,” Raymond said. “Our students have the chance to do real work for real clients, using the sophisticated analysis, writing, and communication skills they’re learning every day.”
In recent years, more than 80 percent of students participated in clinical opportunities or externships. A number of clinics focus on criminal law; others provide services in civil matters such as family law, consumer issues, health care, and entrepreneurship. Numerous government agencies and courts are located less than a mile from the law school, which provides extensive learning opportunities for students.
The school strives to create a collegial and supportive atmosphere. All first-year students have one substantive course taught in a small group, which enables them to develop close relationships with instructors as well as with fellow law students. Located in the heart of the main campus, there’s plenty of housing for all attendees.
The school’s graduates also can take advantage of Wisconsin’s unique diploma privilege, which enables students to receive a license to practice law in Wisconsin without sitting for the bar exam.
