Are things looking up for summer associate hiring?

Could things finally be looking up for the Class of 2013? Some economic indicators seem to be pointing towards good news for summer 2012 hiring.  Results from The American Lawyer’s latest Summer Hiring Survey, found that the average 2011 summer class size increased 25 percent over 2010 at 100 leading law firms. Among the Am Law 50 firms, the class sizes were up 36 percent, to an average of 76.3 associates.

Law school on campus recruiting started early this year, with many firms visiting law school campuses across the country in early to mid August.

This is very welcome news, especially after law firms were so heavily impacted by the economic collapse in 2008 and 2009. 40 percent of 2009 summer associates had their permanent position start dates deferred, according to NALP, the National Association for Legal Professionals. Summer associate programs were at their lowest levels, with law firms hiring 44 percent fewer students than in 2009, according to an American Lawyer survey.

Summer associates who work at firms during the summer of 2012, if made permanent offers, would start as permanent associates in the fall of 2013. Let’s hope things continue to look up.
