Bar exam pass rates drop

It was a bad month for 2015 graduates, after several jurisdictions reported lower bar pass rates for the July 2015 exam. In New York, 11 of 16 law schools saw their bar passage rates drop from the prior year. The statewide pass rate dropped from 88 percent in 2013, to 83 percent in 2014, and 79 percent in 2015. Still, five schools bucked the trend, including City University of New York School of Law and Pace University School of Law.

In California , the overall rate dropped from 48.6 percent in 2014 to 46.6 percent in 2015. That was the lowest pass rate in the nation. But the situation is better than it looks. The pass rate for first-time takers was 60 percent. The first-time pass rate for ABA-accredited schools was 68 percent. Also, based on MBE scores, 50 percent of the students who failed the bar exam would have passed in another state, according to Derek Muller in a blog post. Muller is an associate professor at Pepperdine University School of Law.
