As the year draws to a close, there is finally some good news. The legal sector showed some modest gains in November, adding 100 jobs, according to a recently released report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The seasonally adjusted figures for October also included a gain of 400 jobs in the legal sector, according to the BLS report.
The nation’s overall unemployment figures also finally improved. They dropped to 8.6 % last month, the lowest level in two and a half years, the AmLaw Daily reported. Until now, the nation’s unemployment rate had been stuck at 9% for much of 2011.
While the improvement may be slight, it still reflects a rosier picture than in September, when the legal sector lost about 1200 jobs, according to the AmLaw report. Overall, the legal sector showed a net loss of approximately 1,000 jobs in 2011.
Hopefully, the December numbers will continue to grow as we head towards the New Year. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that things will look up more significantly in 2012.
