Pace names law school after environmentalist

Pace University has renamed its law school the Elisabeth Haub School of Law after an environmental advocate and philanthropist.

The university isn’t saying how much was gifted, but the donation is the largest in the school’s history.

The school will be just the second law school in the U.S. named solely for a woman; the Sandra Day O’Connor School of Law at Arizona State University was the first.

Naming rights typically come in the $20 million to $30 million range. Last month, George Mason University received $30 million to rename its law school after the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, and in January, Villanova University named its law school after alumnus Charles Widger, who donated $25 million.

These gifts come at a time when law schools are pinching pennies thanks to declines in enrollment and decreased funding.

“We are enormously thankful for the Haub family’s support of our distinctive ‘path to practice’ model of legal education,” said David Yassky, dean of the law school. “At a time when many law schools are retrenching, this gift allows us to strengthen our program, especially the in-the-field learning that we believe is so crucial for students’ success in practice.”

The gift from the Haub family will establish an endowment for the Law School and also fund specific initiatives in the Environmental Law program. The new Haub Scholars program will provide reduced tuition to a select group of students.

Haub, who died in 1977, devoted much of her life to the stewardship of sustainability, forming the first foundation dedicated to establishing laws for nature conservation and environmental protection. Her children and grandchildren have continued her work through the family business, the Tengelmann Group, a German retail holding company and through the Elisabeth Haub Foundations for Environmental Law and Policy.
