Syracuse offers Disability Rights Scholarship to foreign attorneys

Syracuse University College of Law is offering a unique Disability Rights Scholarship Program to foreign-trained attorneys through the Open Society Foundation. Syracuse is one of two colleges in the U.S. to offer the scholarships to train lawyers from select countries with a focus on the growing field of disability rights. The College currently has students from Kenya, Peru and South Sudan.

“Disability rights was not being taught in law schools,” Alison Hillman, a senior program officer with the Open Society Human Rights Initiative said. “There was very little curriculum developed, and law students weren’t getting practical experience in dealing with persons with disabilities or in representing them.”
