Vermont launches online environmental LL.M.

Vermont Law School , which is already at the forefront of the environmental law field, will now test the waters of online courses. The private law school recently announced a new online LL.M. in environmental law for post-J.D. students as well as a master’s degree in environmental law for non-lawyers.

Vermont will gear the programs toward students who want to take advantage of the school’s expertise and resources in environmental law but aren’t able to attend classes at its campus. Two key advantages of an online program are the flexibility and accessibility offered to students who want or need to continue working while earning a degree.

The two new programs were launched after several years of research, which included online pilot courses. Vermont plans to enroll more than 100 students in the first year of the program, and 230 students in year two.

As one of the first universities to implement online learning for environmental law programs, Vermont will be under close scrutiny.

“Other institutions are watching us, looking to our example as the way to offer responsible, effective and valued legal education in the 21st century,” said Rebecca Purdom, director of distance learning and an associate professor. “[Vermont] will set the standard for a new kind of distance education.”
