Villanova University has named John Yukio Gotanda dean of the Villanova School of Law effective Jan. 1, 2011. The decision comes after a national search, conducted by a committee of Villanova trustees, faculty, administrators and alumni.

Gotanda comes to the position with a history of professional success. Often regarded as one of the world’s most reliable sources on damages in international law, he has published in leading journals including the American Journal of International Law, the Harvard International Law Journal and the Oxford University Comparative Law Forum.

“We’re incredibly fortunate to have a legal scholar and academic leader of John Gotanda’s caliber,” said Villanova University President, the Rev. Peter M. Donohue. “John’s exceptional qualifications, impressive vision, and strong leadership abilities- combined with his prove commitment to Villanova’s Catholic and Augustinian mission- make him uniquely qualified to lead the School of Law as it achieves new levels of excellence in the coming years.”

Gotanda has previously served as the associate dean for Academic Affairs, associate dean for Resarch and a professor for Villanova.

“We have a strong and talented group of faculty, students, and alumni,” Gotanda said. “I am honored to be entrusted with leading and collaborating with such an impressive group of scholars and students at Villanova School of Law as we move into the next century.”

Gotanda’s main goal as dean is to emphasize the importance of a united academic community. He will lead curricular and professional development initiatives, student services, faculty research support, external relations, and alumni services. In addition, he plans to bring new life to the School’s Catholic and Augustinian roots.
