Belmont law hires former US Attorney General Gonzales

Belmont University College of Law made a bold move and hired former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, a controversial political figure who OK’ed waterboarding tactics while he was counsel to President George W. Bush.

He will be the only former chief law enforcement officer of the U.S. on a law school’s full-time faculty when he starts teaching at the new Nashville institution in January, noted Belmont.

Derrick Bell dies at age 80

Derrick Bell, a law professor and rights advocate, died Oct. 5th at the age of 80. The New York University law professor was the first tenured black professor at Harvard Law School, hired in 1969. He became dean of The University of Oregon School of Law in 1980, becoming the first black to ever head a non-black law school. He left the school in 1985 to protest the lack of minority hiring and taught at Stanford for a year.

Promotions at Campbell, Elon, Northeastern

Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law named Melodye Hendrix as its new Senior Director of Development. Hendrix’s responsibilities will include: overseeing development, alumni relations, and communications, along with all aspects of fundraising, the annual fund and major gifts for the law school. Before Hendrix came to Campbell she was Director of Development at Duke University School of Medicine.

NALP names Marcelyn Cox as new president

Marcelyn R. Cox, Assistant Dean of Career Development at Miami Law, is the newest President of the National Association for Law Placement (NALP) after her recent appointment in the end of April.

Cox’s past experience with NALP includes service as Treasurer, Southeast Regional Director, Chair of the Diversity Section, Nominating Committee, Awards of Distinction Committee, Audit Committee, and Investment Oversight Committee, and a variety of other committees and work groups. Cox has also been a speaker at NALP conferences.

Bellamy takes over as Miami's director of International Public Interest Programs

Gretchen Bellamy recently joined University of Miami’s law school as the Director of International Public Interest Programs for the HOPE Public Interest Resource Center. Before joining in April, Bellamy earned a J.D. and an LL.M. in international and comparative law from Duke University School of Law in 2005. While in law school, she pursued an externship where she worked for an international non-governmental organization in Harare, Zimbabwe. In addition, she studied comparative law at the University of Nairobi in Kenya.

UCLA’s Carole Goldberg appointed to serve on Commission by President Obama

UCLA law professor Carole Goldberg has been appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the Tribal Law and Order Commission. The Commission is tasked with improving public safety on Indian lands by lowering domestic violence and sexual assault rates s well as alcohol and drug abuse.
