Hofstra University School of Law is located in Hempstead, N.Y., 20 miles outside of New York City in suburban Long Island.

While school is capable in the basic areas of law, Jeffrey Dodge, assistant dean for global initiatives and multi-cultural affairs, said that the international program is really becoming a cornerstone of the school. The faculty consists of more than 50 nationally and internationally recognized scholars who represent diverse fields.

Hofstra is the first law school to partner with Rosetta Stone, which allows students to learn a new language, with charges included in tuition. In addition, they have a Global Legal Practice externship program that takes place in seven different cities.

“[Our dean] believes that students need more international exposure to succeed in the legal marketplace as they head out the door,” Dodge said.

Hofstra is launching an intensive immigration program working with the Department of Homeland Security, which will put students on the frontlines with United States-Mexico border agents.

Hofstra is also recognized as a pioneer in fully integrating clinical education into a traditional law school curriculum. By the late 1970s, the school had one of the largest clinical programs in the nation.

In 2012, the law school will introduce an environmental law program in Ecuador over spring break. The public interest program received a B by The National Jurist in their ranking.
