Chicago-Kent opens solo incubator

Chicago-Kent College of Law is the latest school to start a solo incubator for its graduates.

CUNY Law School pioneered the concept in 2007 when it offered low-cost office space in Manhattan and staff support to a select number of graduates.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law unveiled a solo and small-firm incubator in Fall 2010, and the University of Maryland School of Law introduced an incubator in January 2012. More recently both California Western and Thomas Jefferson in San Diego announced similar plans, and Pace Law School opened a program in September.

Chicago-Kent’s “Solo and Small Firm Incubator” is a one-year program housed in the law school. The school selected seven participants through an application process that required business plans. The law school provides technology, legal research tools and workshops on business management and practice-related topics. Participants are expected to contribute ten hours each week to assisting cases in the school’s clinic.
