Northeastern law partners up to create dual-degree programs

In response to a growing interest in sustainable international development and environmental law, Northeastern University School of Law is partnering with Brandeis University and Vermont Law School to create two new dual-degree programs.

The two new programs — Sustainable International Development in collaboration with Brandeis’ Heller School for Social Policy and Management and Environmental Law and Policy with Vermont — will enable students to simultaneously earn law and master’s degrees.

“In today’s increasingly competitive market, students who graduate with academic and internship experience in areas where the demand for legal expertise is growing are clearly better positioned for the future,” said Emily Spieler, dean of Northeastern’s School of Law.

She pointed out that the program with Brandeis would enable students to participate in combined law/international development co-ops and earn a dual degree in four years, rather than five if the degrees were obtained separately.

Students graduate from the program with Vermont Law School in three years with training to play advocacy roles in such areas as sustainable development, pollution control, environmental justice and energy policy.

The two new programs are patterned after a successful dual JD/MPH degree program that Northeastern began 10 years ago in partnership with Tufts University School of Medicine.
