Being the only law school in a state has its benefits, and Roger Williams University School of Law certainly has enjoyed them. The Bristol, R.I., university has a cooperative relationship with the Rhode Island Supreme Court and its students have an essential lock on externships in the state. It also has one of the lowest tuition rates in the area, especially after an 18-percent reduction in 2014. It also guarantees tuition will not rise once a student is enrolled.

“There are lots of advantages; we offer students the best of town and country,” said Dean Michael Yelnosky. “Providence is a terrific place to be a law student because of its compact size. Federal courts, state courts, federal prosecutors, state prosecutors, the executive branch of the state, the legislature, major companies — they are all within walking distance of our Providence facility.”

Roger Williams University’s small size and strong regional reputation give students a strong education on which to build, reflected in its high post-grad employment rate. Yelnosky noted that the school guarantees every student a substantial clinical experience, either at-home or abroad.

Furthermore, Roger Williams was one of the first schools to increase its pro bono graduation requirement to 50 hours.

“We have sort of doubled down on our commitment to a personalized education,” Yelnosky said. “We are not like every other law school.  We have been a leader and innovator in experiential education. We know the job market is tough, and we have law students that can navigate it.”
