Southern University Law Center, in Baton Rouge, La., provides one of the most diverse student bodies and faculties in the country. The historic black college has ranked as a top school for African Americans, in previous issues of preLaw magazine. That ranking is based on a large percent of minority students and faculty, and is a point of pride for the school.
For the low cost, students graduate with some form of practical training. More than 80 percent of Southern University students participate in at least one of the school’s eight clinics. One such clinic is the Disaster Relief Clinic, which kicks into action when local residents are hit with tragedies like Hurricane Katrina or the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Other clinical programs focus on Administrative/Civil Law, Criminal Law, Domestic Violence, Elder Law, Juvenile Law, Low-income Taxpayer, and Mediation.
