The University of Richmond School of Law is one of the best value private schools in the nation. preLaw ranked it 5th among private schools in 2017, and gave it a B+ overall.
That ranking is based on strong employment (81 percent) and bar pass rates (83.7 percent), combined with a strong scholarship program. The school discounted tuition by an estimated 39.8 percent in 2016-17, for a net tuition of $24,991.
The school has also done a lot in recent years to improve its practical training.
“Our students have unparalleled opportunities to put what they are learning into practice through our pro bono programs, our clinics, and our summer fellowship program,” said Dean Wendy Perdue. “They are working with real clients and trying real cases. This year, nearly 40 percent of our graduating students tried a case or argued a motion in court before graduation.”
The school emphasizes real-world experience through summer programs. It offers guaranteed stipends to students taking on a position with government or nonprofit agencies.
More judges in Virginia call University of Richmond their alma mater than any other law school. For 2017 graduates, 23.2 percent landed a judicial clerkship, highest in the state. Of that, 7.2 percent were federal clerkships, 20th highest in the nation.
Finally, it offers one of the top programs in intellectual property and it offers a D.C. Externship program that allows third-year students to spend a semester interning in federal agencies or nonprofit organizations, completing 500 hours of substantive legal work supplemented by a weekly seminar.
