William & Mary Law School, located in Williamsburg, Va., is the nation’s oldest law school, established in 1779. The school is steeped in history and, as a state school, offers a lower price point than most in the region.

That has helped it earn honors as a Best Value law school, where it received a B+.

As with the University of Virginia, U.S. President Thomas Jefferson heavily influences William and Mary’s mission statement. It pushes Jefferson’s philosophy of “the citizen lawyer,” a skilled lawyer who is also taught to be a citizen and community leader. Many professors at William and Mary exemplify the “citizen lawyer” by serving as open advocates of human rights.

The school helps students acquire the skills they need through its Legal Practice Program, nine legal clinics, expanded externship program and a one-year post-graduate fellowship program. Those offerings helped the school earn an A- for practical training. In 2017, it opened a new home for experiential learning programs. The two-story, 12,000-square-foot James A. and Robin L. Hixon Center for Experiential Learning and Leadership marked the culmination of a 16-year building program that allowed the school to double its physical space.

William & Mary is a top law school for both business law and environmental law, and it placed No. 5 for government, based on employment and curricular offerings.
