Drexel prof fights back in Washington Post column

Related Articles

It was a BAD week for deft public relations, after a Drexel law professor wrote a column about why it was inappropriate for people to publicly shame her for accidently sending her students a link to a pornographic site.

While Above the Law and some other sites had written about the mistake, few knew about the incident until Lisa McElroy wrote a column for the Washington Post. It was the most-read column on the paper’s website.

“Seemingly, private citizens do not have the right to that one simple thing: privacy,” she wrote. “In a moment, through no desire of their own, they can become public figures, shamed in headlines for conduct that is unintentional and harmful to no one — except themselves, as the news media exploit them for sport and profit.”

McElroy was criticized for blaming the media and others instead of accepting responsibility.

David Lat, an editor at Above the Law, wrote that McElroy should fess up and admit to watching porn. After all, he wrote, he views sexually explicit images.
