Lewis & Clark to offer an online LL.M. in its signature specialty: Environmental Law

Portland — being in the upper western corner of the United States — has never been the easiest place to get to.

If you live in New York, you’re 2,893 miles away. If you’re coming from London, it’s a 12-hour flight.

And if you have a deep desire to make a difference in environmental causes, that’s a drag because Portland is home to Lewis & Clark Law School, which boasts one of the nation’s best environmental law programs.

But it’s a drag no more. No matter where you live, you can come to Portland via online technology. Lewis & Clark is now offering its LL.M. degree in Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law through a distance-learning online option.

The online LLM in Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law builds on the law school’s internationally recognized post-J.D. environmental law Master’s program, and is specifically designed for attorneys who want to more effectively practice in today’s global environmental legal issues.  Applications for the Fall 2019 cohort are now being accepted.

Attorneys around the world — yep, even if you live in London — can now obtain the LL.M. degree from one of the highest-ranked environmental law programs in the nation without the need for relocation or a very punishing commute.

For 30 years, the on-campus Lewis & Clark Law Environmental Law LL.M. has provided working lawyers an effective way to advance their legal career with this specialization in environmental law. Previous graduates of the in-person LL.M. in Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law at Lewis & Clark have described this program as a challenging, exhilarating, and career-enhancing experience.

“At Lewis & Clark Law School, we are committed to offering our top-ranked faculty, curriculum, and educational opportunities on a new platform. With this new online version of our Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law LLM, students will be able to earn a valuable education without disruption to their personal or professional commitments. We are excited to provide this innovative learning opportunity to legal professionals around the world,” said Janice Weis, associate dean and director, Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law Program.

The program is designed for lawyers who are in private practice, serve as government employees, elected officials, energy advisors, natural resources law specialists, and others. The online courses will be taught by some of the nation’s leading scholars. Learn more about the Lewis & Clark Law School Faculty here.

Lewis & Clark’s Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law LL.M. will include courses on:

  • Climate Change
  • Energy Law
  • Environmental Law
  • Wildlife Law
  • Public Lands

The courses will integrate advanced online learning methods, such as self-paced and interactive video lectures and virtual online office hours each week with faculty, with the ability for students to discuss and collaborate online. American Bar Association (ABA) acquiescence for this degree is pending.

iLawVentures, owned by Barbri, is the technological company behind the offering. iLaw partners with law schools to create, market, deliver, monitor, and operate online programs and content. Ken Randall, CEO and president of iLaw, and a former chair of the ABA’s Technology Committee, told our magazine earlier that he foresees more schools looking to adopt online learning options. That a program of this stature is now online shows that the evolution is very much in progress.
