University of Virginia unveiled a new clinic that allows law students to provide legal services to aspiring entrepreneurs at the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration.

Richard Crawford, associate director of development for the law school’s law and business program, said the Transactional Law Clinic is part of the school’s effort to better prepare students to practice business law professionally.

“We have this academic program within the law school that gives students classroom education in business topics … but they don’t actually meet any real business people, except who might come and visit the class,” he said.

Philippe Sommer, director of entrepreneurship programs at the Darden School, spends his summers directing the Darden Business Incubator, a 10-week program that helps Darden students develop business ideas.

Each summer, the incubator gives 12 to 18 fledgling businesses $13,000 to take their company “to the next level,” Sommer said. Over the summer, the incubator supported businesses ranging from capital management to manufacturing and sales of fly-fishing equipment.
Law students help the Darden students with company formation documents and identify potential legal issues.
