Univ. Utah plans new building to avoid accreditation problems

The Univeristy of Utah plans to build a new $60.5 million building for its law school, assuming it can raise the necessary money.

The new building would include a plaza, outdoor cafe and gateway for the university. More importantly, it would significantly increase the amount of square footage per student. The school currently provides seven square feet of non-classroom space per student. The proposed building will add 60,000 square feet.

The public institution has vowed to raise all the money through donations, most of which has already been pledged.

“We are building a teaching hospital for law,” dean Hiram Chodosh told the Salt Lake Tribune. “We are building clinical and practical training into our program, as well as the ethos of service in each and every student.”

Chodosh said the school’s future accreditation depends on the new building.

“Our accreditation only survived because of the vision of the future,” Chodosh told the Salt Lake Tribune.

The school hopes to break ground in May 2013, with completion before the start of the 2014-2015 academic year.
